Overview of the most effective folk remedies for lice and nits and a scheme for their use
Folk remedies for lice are usually used by those who are prone to allergies or simply prefer to use natural preparations. As a rule, these methods are somewhat inferior to modern insecticides in terms of reliability and ease of use, but in most cases they give a positive result.
We determine the type of parasites
To remove lice at home, you first need to choose the right tool, the choice of which will depend on the type of parasites themselves.
Head lice can be eliminated with help:
- vodka;
- peppermint;
- pomegranate juice;
- black caraway seeds
- geranium oils;
- cranberry juice;
- kerosene;
- vinegar with salt.
Pubic lice output:
- mercury ointment;
- kerosene;
- black caraway seeds.
To remove clothes parasites, it is enough to wash the infected things at the highest possible temperature with the addition of an insecticidal preparation. If washing in automatic mode is impossible, then the clothes can simply be hung on the balcony and left for two weeks - lice will die of starvation.
We use folk remedies
So, after you have decided on the type of parasites against which you will fight, you can proceed directly to the treatment of head lice folk remedies.
Mercury ointment
Mercury ointment is considered one of the most effective folk remedies for pubic lice and nits. It is applied as follows:
- the affected area should be shaved;
- wash thoroughly using laundry soap and hot water;
- apply ointment and rub into skin.
This procedure must be carried out twice a day for a week.
Important! Mercury ointment contains mercury compounds that are toxic, for which reason this drug was no longer used for medical purposes. But precisely because of its toxicity, this ointment is highly effective against both adult lice and nits.
Vodka
How to remove lice with vodka? It should immediately be said that vodka is not able to kill insects. It is used only to weaken the attachment of nits to the hair, because, as you know, the sticky substance located on the shell of the eggs does not dissolve in water. And vodka copes with this problem quite well.
To do the following:
- dry hair thoroughly combed with a regular comb or comb;
- moisten a cotton pad in vodka;
- apply the product along the entire length of the hair - from the roots to the ends. Particular attention should be paid to the root zone and try not to leave dry areas;
- leave the composition on the hair for 15 minutes;
- comb out peeled nits special comb (how to use it correctly will be described a little later);
- wash your hair with regular shampoo.
Important! Remember that vodka is an ineffective anti-lice product and can only be used as a kind of solvent that helps separate nits from hair.
Cranberry juice
Cranberries from lice and nits, as shown by many years of practice, are also very effective. It is used as follows:
- sort out a couple of handfuls of berries, rinse and squeeze the juice;
- add a teaspoon of honey and distribute the mixture through the hair, as always carefully rub it into the root zone;
- leave for 30 minutes and rinse with regular shampoo.
It is recommended to use this tool daily until all parasites die.
Geranium oil
It is known that lice are scared away by the intense aroma that some plants possess. Geranium oil also belongs to such a remedy. To process the head, add a few drops of this oil to the shampoo and wash its hair.
Daily procedures will significantly reduce the number of insects - they will not die, they will try to leave the affected area.
Decoction of burdock and elecampane
These funds can also be used to combat lice at home. Burdock is a well-known plant with insecticidal properties, elecampane is a medicinal plant that also helps to get rid of insects.
To prepare the broth, you should take a dry and fresh plant (which one you choose yourself), pour boiling water and filter it after an hour. The resulting broth is used to rinse the hair.
Black cumin
This method came to us from the East. It was there that they found out that lice are afraid of the intense smell of this spice and began to use black cumin to fight them. The procedure is carried out in the following way:
- grind caraway seeds into powder;
- combine the resulting flour with apple cider vinegar in a ratio of 1: 1;
- rub the hair with this mixture and leave for 20 minutes;
Advice! During this time, it is recommended to expose the affected area to ultraviolet radiation (direct sunlight).
The procedure is carried out every day for one week.
Pomegranate juice
To get rid of lice with pomegranate juice, it must be mixed with mint leaves and boil the mixture for several minutes. The resulting broth is rubbed into the affected area.
The result is as follows: the essential oil contained in mint acts on adults, and grana acid affects both sexually mature lice and helps to remove nits from hair.
Kerosene
Once the most popular folk remedy was kerosene from lice and nits. But to use it in its pure form is not recommended - to mitigate the aggressive effects, mix it with vegetable oil.
Apply kerosene as follows:
- the resulting solution is applied to the hair along their entire length;
- cover the head with polyethylene, insulate with a towel on top;
- left for 1.5-2 hours, if the treatment is carried out for an adult, and for 1 hour - for the child (which is extremely undesirable!);
- wash hair with regular shampoo;
- comb out dead insects with a comb, which must first be dipped in vinegar.
Important! Kerosene can cause burns, especially if used in its purest form. Therefore, if you take this remedy, then use it carefully and always listen to your feelings.

Vinegar and salt
Head lice treatment can be carried out using a mixture of table vinegar and sodium chloride:
- dilute a glass of table vinegar with water to get a 3% concentration;
- add 43 g of table salt;
- mix well until salt crystals are completely dissolved;
- pour 5 ml of alcohol 96%;
- wash hair, dry with a towel;
- distribute the prepared mixture through the hair;
- the compress must be renewed continuously for 2 days;
- after which the hair is washed and combed out with a comb.
So, we figured out how to get rid of lice with folk remedies. Now you need to consider the principle of using additional funds that will help strengthen the effect of the drug used.
Combs for combing parasites
The combing of lice and nits is carried out with special anti-pedicular combs. They are quite effective, especially provided that the insects are already weakened by one of the above folk remedies. What you need to know about using ridges:
- You can use both conventional and electric combs.The latter cost much more, but, as practice shows, are less reliable, due to the small height of the canvas;
- combing is recommended to be carried out precisely on wet hair, in which case the teeth will be much easier to slip and cause a minimum of inconvenience to the patient;
- the hair should be fixed on one side of the head with an elastic band (if its length allows) and comb out the lock by lock from the very roots to the ends;
- the combs will be most effective if the attachment of nits to the hair is weakened by vodka, pomegranate or cranberry juice. Otherwise, several treatments will be required, which is associated with the small size of the eggs - if they are firmly fixed on the strands, a significant part of them will remain there;
- two weeks after the first combing, the procedure must be repeated - in any case, several nits will remain in the hair, and repeated combing will allow you to remove the insects hatched from them;
- the procedure itself is preferably carried out over the bathtub or by putting the patient on a sheet that needs to be spread on the floor. This will prevent the possibility of lice getting on the floor or sofa;
- the handler himself must strip to the waist so that the parasites do not get on his clothes, a scarf is tied to his head;
- upon completion of combing, the comb must be immediately washed under running hot water or dipped in boiling water;
- after combing, the patient washes his head with an ordinary shampoo.
It is worth saying that all of the above funds have proven themselves not only in the quality of treatment, but also in the prevention of lice at home. Especially those in which there are ether compounds: decoction of burdock, mint, etc. These smells scare off parasites and significantly reduce the risk of infection in crowded places.
How many dense remedies, from which there are burns, dandruff and allergies. It seems to me that folk remedies are good or preventative, because their reliability is weak and there is a lot of trouble with them. There are so many simple and convenient means in the pharmacy now, if only I were looking for cranberries or tormented a child with kerosene. They took it out a year ago with a proven action algorithm - processing and combing, first spray Paranit (he has a double-action formula, not chemical, on poisons, but physical, he dries and strangles lice and nits.) Then combed out with antivirus and the comb in the box walked with the product, and at the end by hand. I did not want to risk and miss at least one nits. And then again in a new way. Combs are necessary, but without treatment, too, nothing, it would have to sit by combing out for three days alone, at our level of neglect))
Actual article. I agree with Olga. There was nothing to deduce in the 90s, that’s kerosene, dichlorvos was taken into circulation. Now everything is in large numbers, but unfortunately there are a lot of chemicals and they do nothing with lice over time. Dimethicone has a future!
Cranberries, by the way, are an effective method of combating pediculosis; everything was taken out of me once in my childhood. And when this year parasites appeared in a child, she also thought of removing cranberries, but a friend brought me a bag of D-95, it’s like a silicone fluid that simply chokes an animal, and then it remains to comb it with a comb, treated its head with its son, withstood 45 minutes and combed everything. Then how many checked, and not a trace of parasites. The liquid is harmless, not poisonous, it helped us, I don’t know how much it costs, but my friend said a penny.
Sredsvo D-95, really works. I brought my son three times lice, he brought them from his grandmother from the village.The first time I had to shave my child naked, the second time I treated it with vinegar and salt, the only negative in this treatment is the smell of vinegar. But for the third time I bought D-95 in a pharmacy, with this remedy I removed lice in one day.
This article is interesting, the problem of lice has been and will be. Only now a lot of drugs have appeared, expensive and not, effective and not very. In my time, when my children grew up, there was nothing like that, there was dust, tar, and kerosene, which also did not help much, they sat for hours pushing nits, combing, it took more than one day. Now my grandchildren brought these parasites from school, my daughter-in-law brought them D-95, reliable, inexpensive, the girls advised the pharmacy. The main thing in the drug is that it does not contain chemistry.
Yes, the drug D95 is proven. I liked that the child tolerated it well, did not cry, did not act up. The most important thing is not toxic. And lice with nits die.
You can comb out lice with a comb, and nits sit so tightly. They only need to be crushed. Not every remedy kills them. I was able to daughter only Means D95 to remove these parasites. They were transported all day, long hair, while applied, so as not to miss, and combed out for half a day. Well, they brought everyone out, not one was alive, neither nits nor lice.
