How to distinguish between ointment, cream and gel?

1. Ointment is a dosage form with a fat base in which the particles of the active substance do not completely dissolve. The ointment is absorbed slowly, due to which it has the longest lasting effect.
2. The cream has a much smaller portion of fat in its composition, but, despite this, it is able to leave visible grease stains on clothing. The cream is opaque and, unlike ointment, is absorbed much faster.
3. The gel is made on a water basis in which the active substance is completely dissolved. This makes it easy to wipe it off clothing and wash it off the skin.
